As Hunter pointed out below, the Hatchet buried the story of former SA Presidential candidate Casey Pond’s recent arrest, consigning it to a mention in the crime log. The actual log entry:
A UPD supervisor observed two male GW students fighting on the ground outside Funger and Duqués. The supervisor told them to separate, and one subject attempted to flee the scene. This subject was stopped while the other individual explained that the fight was started because he told the subject that he drank too much alcohol. The subject was intoxicated and continued to be resistant, screaming at the officers. The Metropolitan Police Department was contacted to assist, and the subject was transported to a detoxification center.
So Pond was drunk and in a fight, resisted arrest, and yelled at a police officer. No one hit a cop (as was rumored earlier), and Pond was sent to a detox center. No serious crime was committed. Now, I was initially all for the Hatchet delving deeper with a full article on the subject. Given that Pond’s offense was minor and he is no longer a Student Association official (unlike, say, the SA Senator that was charged with assault recently), though, I’m beginning to agree with this assessment:
Unless Casey were — right now — involved in the SA at the (vice) presidential level / hit someone in the SA (or otherwise affiliated with the University) / destroyed a retaining wall of a dormitory / ate fifteen hamburgers / learned how to make really awesome balloon animals, etc., I can’t see any reason to write a story about whatever fuckall bullshit he finds himself in.
The Hatchet did the right thing, mentioning it only in the crime log where non-news like this should be buried.
