In honor of tax day, I have some thoughts on Mr. Obama’s call for higher taxes on the “wealthy” in order to get our fiscal house back in order. On Wednesday, President Obama visited the GW campus, stating that “one of the reasons I kept the government open was so I could be here today with all of you.” Well, I wish you hadn’t Mr. President. At a time when Republicans are proposing a serious debt reduction plan that reforms the government’s problems, Obama’s only plan is to tax the so-called “rich”. Obama stated that “the most fortunate among us can afford to pay a little more. I don’t need another tax cut. Warren Buffett doesn’t need another tax cut.” Well I am sorry if I don’t see the connection between my parents who own a small business and earn just over Mr. Obama’s “rich” limit ($250,000) and the richest man in the world or the President of the United States.  Mr. Obama states that the wealthy “want to give back to the country that’s done so much for them, Washington just hasn’t asked them to.”
So I have a plan. Have the IRS create a donation check box on the bottom of the tax form where anyone can donate more than the required amount by law. Hell, set up a tier system as an incentive, so that some can be “Platinum Level Donors” or “Gold Level Donors” where they can get a free t-shirts for different amounts. If all these people are lining up to give more in taxes and just haven’t been asked, I think this is a great approach to test out Mr. Obama’s theory. But I suspect that what the president said just isn’t true, and that this is just one more instance of Mr. Obama blowing smoke up the skirt of the American people.
